First Left-handed Golf Major Winner – 1963 British Open, Sir Bob Charles
Sir Bob Charles is one of the most successful left handed golfers of all time. Charles was born and raised in New Zealand and was the first left-hand golfer to win a golf major, winning the 1963 British Open at the Royal Lytham and St. Annes Golf Club in a 36 hole playoff with USA player Phil Rogers.
Charles also went on to win the Senior British Open in 1993, 30 years after winning the British Open. He has had 66 professional wins including numerous New Zealand Opens, and has enjoyed a lucrative career on the senior tour.
Left-handed Golf Major Winners
After Sir Bob Charles won the British Open in 1963, it was quite a wait for another lefty to join him with a golf major win. That day came on 40 years later on April 13th, 2003, when Canadian Left handed golfer, Mike Weir won the prestigious Masters Tournament at Augusta, also becoming the first Canadian male to win a major golf championship.
We only had to wait 1 year for another left-handed golf major winner, when Mike Weir fittingly got to put the jacket on Phil Mickelson, when he won the 2004 Masters at Augusta.
Phil went on to win his second Major Championship, when he won the 2005 PGA Championship with a 1 stroke victory over Thomas Bjorn and Steve Elkington. Mickelson’s third Major Golf victory came, when he defended his title at the 2006 Masters, with a 2 stroke victory over South African, Tim Clark.
In 2010 Mickelson wins his third Masters at Augusta National in Georgia followed 2 years later by American Bubba Watson, meaning 5 of the 7 majors won by a lefty have been at The Masters at Augusta National in Georgia.
